North Dakota’s public universities are weighing a quiet but consequential change: whether some bachelor’s degrees could be completed in 90 credits instead of the traditional 120. Supporters see a way to lower costs and move students into the workforce faster; critics worry about protecting academic quality and how employers might view a shorter degree. The State Board of Higher Education is proceeding cautiously, asking for firm guardrails and limits as it considers a draft policy that could reshape how certain applied degrees are earned. Robin Huebner with InForum has the full story.
The pressure on Venezuela is entering a sharper, more dangerous phase. President Trump has ordered a partial blockade of sanctioned oil tankers, paired with sweeping claims that Venezuela “stole” U.S. assets and a renewed push to isolate President Nicolás Maduro. The move deepens Washington’s long-running campaign against Caracas, drawing alarm from regional leaders and even rare pushback from Congress. While framed as an anti-drug effort, the escalation raises broader questions about economic fallout, regional stability, and how far the confrontation could go next. Patrick J. McDonnell, Ana Ceballos, Kate Linthicum with Los Angeles Times has the full story.
Sweden is confronting a demographic problem that’s starting to look less abstract and more urgent. A government-appointed inquiry has released its first findings on the country’s falling birth rate, warning that fewer children today could strain the welfare system and slow economic growth tomorrow. The report frames the issue not as a social trend, but as a structural risk. Investigator Åsa Hansson argues that without more young people entering the population, Sweden’s long-term economic balance could be difficult to sustain. A tied vote can feel like a decision, but in this case it’s more like a pause button. For the second time this month, the Minot City Council split evenly on whether to award a facade improvement grant to the Minot Housing Authority, leaving the request unresolved. Supporters argued the agency meets the program’s criteria and serves a steady stream of downtown visitors, while opponents questioned whether facade funds should go to a quasi-government entity. With one council member absent again, the stalemate now forces the housing authority to consider its next move.
On This Day
On this day in 1865, an update to the Constitution was over-riding some original language that left a lot of Americans out. In 1892, a famous holiday season ballet was making it’s debut in Russia, and in 1956, the world was beginning to move past the sins of World War II. In 1913 Minot, lynch mob justice was front page news, two brothers were gambling on love, and The Independent had a timeless holiday season message for its readers.
On this day in 1865, the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution was officially declared, abolishing slavery throughout the United States.
On this day in 1892, Tchaikovsky’s famous ballet “The Nutcracker” premiered at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia, eventually becoming a holiday tradition worldwide.
On this day in 1956, Japan was admitted to the United Nations, marking its return to the international community after World War II.

This is a good old world, and it’s growing better every day. So many reasons why we should all be glad, especially at this particular season of the year. Let’s drive dull care away and make ourselves merry in seeing that someone else is made happy. There’s so much good in all of us, but sometimes you have to strike just the right chord in order to notice it. If each of you will just do some kind act for someone else you can make this the Merriest Christmas of them all.
Why we published it:
It’s no surprise that the editors of the Independent had a holiday message worth hearing; they were good at calling their readers virtuously up.
Williston, N. D., Dec. 16.—Cleve Culbertson, who murdered Mr. and Mrs. D. Dillon and their thirteen-year-old daughter at the Dillon farm eight miles north of Ray on the evening of Oct. 21, 1913, was taken from the local jail at Williston at four o’clock Tuesday morning by a masked mob of infuriated citizens, and after being carried to the high railway bridge it spans the Little Muddy a mile and a half east of Williston, was hanged and shot to death. The lynching party disappeared as quietly as they appeared and no one seems to know just who comprised the party.
Why we published it:
This is a sensational event in North Dakota history, and a reminder that when law doesn’t hold the order, we’re vulnerable to a different kind of justice.
James and George Belnap, brothers and suitors for the same girl, yesterday played poker to determine which should have a “clear way” to the girl’s affections. James won and last night told the girl, Miss Jessie Peltier, their method of selection. They arranged to be married.
Why we published it:
There’s two paragraphs here that are the start of great story and they leave plenty of room for the imagination, too. Enjoy.
