On this day in 1170, Thomas Becket, the Archbishop of Canterbury, was murdered by knights loyal to King Henry II, an event that shocked medieval Europe and made Becket a martyr.

On this day in 1890, the Wounded Knee Massacre took place in South Dakota, where U.S. soldiers killed hundreds of Lakota Sioux, marking a tragic end to the Indian Wars.

On this day in 1937, the Irish Constitution took effect, establishing Ireland as a sovereign nation and replacing the Irish Free State with the modern country of Ireland.

He didn’t exactly end up a martyr, but that headache he left the Germans, that was certainly real. What’s remarkable is the world’s ability to function without cable news pundits telling us what to think all day long. Our local editor was able to sum up that task three sentences and he only needed to chime in once a week.
