Soybean farmers are once again caught in the crossfire of global politics. As President Trump prepares a new aid package to offset China’s boycott of U.S. soybeans, many growers say what they really need isn’t a bailout—it’s a buyer. With harvest season underway and China turning to Brazil and Argentina, time is running out to salvage a market that once bought a quarter of America’s crop. The question now is whether trade—or aid—will come first. Didi Tang with Associated Press has the full story.

The dream of a presidential library in the Badlands is taking shape—but not without a little help from the state bank. The Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library Foundation has tapped $53 million of a $70 million line of credit from the Bank of North Dakota to bridge the gap between pledges and payments as construction moves forward. With the project about 70 percent complete, fundraising continues toward its $450 million goal, and the foundation vows to open its doors on July 4, 2026.

Xcel Energy customers in North Dakota are facing an unusually large increase in their electric bill, which a North Dakota official attributes in large part to the company’s move away from coal. Northern States Power Co., part of Minnesota-based Xcel Energy, has asked the North Dakota...

In a small brick building in Warren, Minnesota, two women are keeping a 144-year-old tradition alive. When longtime owners of the Warren Sheaf retired, Kayla Kroll and her friend Mallory Craik stepped in—not as media moguls, but as neighbors determined to preserve their town’s voice. Together they’re balancing motherhood, late nights, and tight budgets to keep the presses rolling—a reminder that in an age of digital noise, local stories still matter most when told close to home.

Alberta’s classrooms could fall silent today as more than 51,000 teachers prepare to strike, halting lessons for over 700,000 students. Talks between the Alberta Teachers Association and the provincial government have stalled, with educators rejecting a 12 percent raise over four years and calling for deeper fixes to crowded classrooms. As last-minute discussions continue, the standoff underscores a familiar struggle in education—how to balance budgets, workloads, and the quality of learning for a generation caught in the middle. The Canadian Press has the full story.

On This Day

On this day in 1927, the “Jazz Singer” made a sound that wooed audiences for the first time. In 1945, justice was catching up with war criminals, and in 1995, the possibility of life on other planets had a new horizon. In 1938 Minot, local investors were taking an at bat for economic development, a standout local student shared a timeless message in verse, there were stories from the old country, and we had finally found the missing mail!

On this day in 1927, “The Jazz Singer,” the first feature-length motion picture with synchronized dialogue, premiered in New York City. This landmark film marked the beginning of the sound era in cinema, transforming the movie industry.

On this day in 1945, a group of leading Nazi officials went on trial in Nuremberg, Germany, for war crimes, crimes against humanity, and other offenses committed during World War II. The Nuremberg Trials were a significant moment in international law and justice.

On this day in 1995, 51 Pegasi b, the first exoplanet orbiting a Sun-like star, was discovered by astronomers Michel Mayor and Didier Queloz. This groundbreaking discovery opened a new era in the search for planets beyond our solar system.

An electrician, Clarence Nyre, was doing some wiring in the house, when he discovered the pouch and some letters it had contained between the inner and outer walls of the building, it was not explained by W. L. Ruddell, postal inspector at Minot.

Why we published it: Maybe that's where all our missing mail has been going? Also, it's five years after yesterday, and our infamous Mr. Langer casting off all old parties and taking his campaign directly to the people!

The proposed building of the $400,000 oil refinery at Minot, appears to have been indefinitely held up due to the refusal of a number of Montana independent oil producers to sign five or six year contracts for their crude petroleum output, Wilfred Nadeau, Cut Bank, Mont., president of the Dakota Refining Co., inc., stated.

Why we published it: If only they had tried to gin this up about 15 years later... we would have had our own North Dakota feedstock for the operation. The past is full of these stories of trips to the plate for an at bat at some new venture. That's how economic development works... not all attempts bear fruit, but a successful, prosperous place always has people stepping up trying to make something happen.

According to the story handed down for hundreds of years, the old Aune farm in Norway was unoccupied for a hundred years or more. Away back in the 13th century they had the “black death” in Norway and some other European countries and so many people died from it that they wouldn’t live on the farms where they contracted the disease because they thought it was from the soil.

Why we published it: Perhaps this is why a few came across an ocean to find a new farm...

And now I’m coming home again, To a land with many ills, Where factions fight for fame and place With angry, clashing wills; Where peoples came from all the earth To search for Liberty, To find too oft that Mammon’s greed Made her seem mockery. But still she holds aloft the torch, Which shines far out at sea, Bidding all who will to strive To make men truly free.

Why we published it: It's always good to be reminded of the high ideals that have successfully bound us together in the past.
