Wolves are known for their instincts, not for using tools—but new footage from coastal British Columbia challenges that assumption. Researchers documenting an invasive crab eradication effort discovered a female wolf methodically retrieving a submerged trap: swimming to the buoy, hauling the line ashore, and tearing into the netting to reach the bait. The sequence, published in Ecology and Evolution, is being described as the first potential tool use ever recorded in wild wolves. It’s a striking reminder of how much we still have to learn about these animals’ intelligence and adaptability. Read the full article on Science Alert. Watch what all the fuss is about below.

Will she or won’t she? I thought to myself. I continued assembling my flute and arranging my music on a stand for our concert. The aroma and sound of popcorn filled the room. As the concert attendees enjoyed their boxes of the fluffy white kernels, I...

I recently completed reading the book 1929 by Andrew Ross Sorkin. In October of 1929, the American stock market crashed and the Great Depression began. In 1929, the stock market was at an all-time high. Today, the stock market is again around an all-time high. The...

On This Day

On this day — possibly — in 534 B.C.E. the man named in the “acting” profession took the stage for the first time. In 1654 a mathematician had a religious experience that reoriented his life, and in 1963, another character inspired by that first “actor” made his debut performance. In 1961 Minot, The Ward County Independent archive was empty so our history column took a day off.

On this day in 534 BCE, Thespis of Icaria became the first recorded actor to appear on stage in ancient Greece, marking the birth of Western theatre.

On this day in 1654, French mathematician and philosopher Blaise Pascal experienced a religious vision that deeply influenced his later work and writings, including his famous “Pensées.”

On this day in 1963, the BBC broadcast the first episode of “Doctor Who,” launching the longest-running science fiction television series in history.

Notes from a Religious Experience

“What a chimera is man!
What a novelty, what a monster, what a chaos, what a contradiction, what a prodigy!
Judge of all things, yet an imbecile worm of the earth;
depositary of truth, yet a cesspool of uncertainty and error;
the glory and the scum of the universe.”

— Blaise Pascal, — Pensées, (Fragment 131)
