City of Helena absorbs curbside recycling rate hikes for Helena residents, Rates on the Increase

Resident recyclers of Helena, Montana receive city-subsidized recycling rates, and both the rate and the subsidy are increasing in 2023. The cost for the City for the remainder of 2023 will be $16 per month, the cost to the resident will be ~$8 per month with the City of Helena subsidizing the difference. Both the rate and the subsidy are going up by about $4 per month due to inflation.

Why does it matter in Minot? It’s an outside comparison point on the eve of introducing recycling in Minot. The opt-in program in Helena has been around since 1989 and has about 1400 subscribers in a town of 33,000. Helena is on its own eve of reconsidering waste management practices; it’s currently developing a solid-waste master plan in conjunction with the County.
