BRANDON, MB- The Souris Valley Sabre Dogs lose Tuesday night 5-2 to the Wheat City Whiskey Jacks. This snaps a ten-game losing streak for the Whiskey Jacks.
It wasn’t the offense’s night on Tuesday, as they were not able to get more than two runs against a Whiskey Jacks’ pitching staff that has a collective ERA of 5.48. Getting hits wasn’t the problem. They were able to get eleven hits. The Sabre Dogs were just unable to bring runners in.
The game was looking promising after the top of the first inning. Phillip Childs led off with a single and Mason Dinesen followed up with another one. Childs then stole third and home to take the lead. In the top of the fourth, the Dogs got another run with Jase Edwards getting a one-out triple. Wilson Roubion then got his eighth RBI of the season with a single.
With the Dogs up 2-0, starting pitcher Zavian Caldwell allowed four runs with three being earned in the bottom of the fourth inning. Nate Brenzer-Mendoza came in relief and did some damage control allowing one unearned run. Caden Kealber finished the night off for the bullpen with a scoreless inning, but the offense was unable to rally. The Sabre Dogs actually got two hits in the ninth. Sam Powers led off with a single, but then Roubion grounded into a double play. With two outs, Phillip Childs hit his second single of the day and stole second, but Dinesen struck out to end the game.
Game two of the series will be Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. from Brandon, Manitoba.
