HASTINGS, NE- The Sabre Dogs picked up their first win since the All-Star break on Thursday night with a 10-7 win over the Hastings Sodbusters. Souris Valley was able to get four runs in the top of the ninth to complete the comeback and snap their seven-game losing streak.
The Sabre Dogs got off to a hot start with three runs in the top of the first inning, but the Sodbusters were able to respond with three of their own. Souris Valley retook the lead in the top of the third with a sac-fly from Bo McClintock to make it 4-3. The Dogs’ offense would then go quiet until the seventh inning which allowed the Sodbusters to take a 7-4 lead. With one run in the seventh and another in the eighth, the Sabre Dogs trailed 7-6 going into the top of the ninth. Mason Dinesen led off with a walk, and Crews Taylor drove him in with an RBI double. With the score tied 7-7, Chauncey Callier wound up on second after getting hit by a pitch and advancing on a double steal with Taylor. That brought up McClintock. He already had three RBI on the day, but he wasn’t done. He got the game-winning two-RBI double to give the Sabre Dogs a 9-7 lead. On top of that, Jase Edwards got an extra run to make sure they would end up with the dub.
McClintock ended up 2-for-3 with five RBI which is a new single-game season-high in runs batted in. Taylor finished his day 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs. Callier and Edwards were both able to go 2-for-4.
The bullpen was excellent for the Sabre Dogs Thursday night with no runs surrendered by any of the three pitchers. Jace Mapston came in during the seventh with two strikeouts and the only surrendered hit. Brock Baughcum was asked to pitch for the Sabre Dogs, stepping away from his infield/third base coaching role. He went an inning, struck out two hitters, and on top of that, picked up the win. Caden Kaelber was able to finish it off with two strikeouts of his own while getting his third save of the season.
The Sabre Dogs, unfortunately, were unable to gain any ground on the Pierre Trappers who defeated the Spearfish Sasquatch 13-2. They remain a half game up with nine regular season games remaining.
Game two of the series will start at 6:35 p.m. on Friday night.
