MINOT, ND- The Pierre Trappers got the better of the Souris Valley Sabre Dogs Tuesday night as the Sabre Dogs lost 7-5. The Sabre Dogs and Trappers called it a draw as they split their first series one game to one.
It was Hunter Roubidoux’s first start of the season and he performed quite well. From the start, he came out guns-a-blazin’ and pitched two perfect innings. In the third, things got rocky, but he remained composed and was able to keep the Trappers off the scoreboard despite allowing a walk, a single, and a hit by pitch. It wasn’t until the fifth inning when things got messy as he allowed four consecutive hits including a three-run homer to give the Trappers a 4-0 lead.
Matt Sartwell came in relief and pitched two scoreless innings with three strikeouts allowing just one walk and one hit. The Sabre Dogs were then finally able to get the bats going as they scored three runs in the sixth thanks to a three-run bomb by Chauncey Callier to make it a 4-3 game.
However, the Trappers were able to respond with a two-run home run of their own in the top of the eighth to make it 6-3. From there, it was a ping-pong match with runs being exchanged every inning. It came down to the bottom of the ninth with the Sabre Dogs down 7-5, and Drew Pollum at the plate with runners on first and second after Crews Taylor was able to bring in Hunter Holland with an RBI single. With the count full, Pollum hit a slow grounder to the shortstop and was out at first by a half-step to end the game.
The Sabre Dogs drop back to 5-5 as they fail to take advantage of the Hub City Hotshots getting rained out. The Sabre Dogs are now in solo-third place in the Lewis Division and 1.5 games behind the first place Badlands Big Sticks. Fortunately, the Sabre Dogs play the Big Sticks next and have an opportunity to gain ground. First pitch tomorrow is at 7:05 p.m.
