On This Day
On this day, a misfire on the Potomac killed the U.S. Secretary of State, Egypt went its own way, and we discovered the secret of life — literally. In Minot, an honest subscriber made good with the local newspaper, North Dakota was a dangerous place, and government research was churning out better butter. Also, we understood we had to let politicians do political things.
On this day in 1844, a gun exploded on the USS Princeton during a demonstration cruise on the Potomac River, killing several high-ranking U.S. government officials, including the Secretary of State and the Secretary of the Navy, and highlighting the dangers of early naval technology.
On this day in 1922, Egypt gained independence from British colonial rule, although British influence remained strong, marking a significant step towards full sovereignty and the establishment of the Kingdom of Egypt.
On this day in 1953, scientists James Watson and Francis Crick announced the discovery of the double-helix structure of DNA, a groundbreaking achievement that revolutionized the field of genetics and our understanding of heredity.

Changes may be coming to Minot’s Social Security office, but officials say there’s no cause for alarm—at least not yet. A federal review is underway, examining office leases nationwide, with an eye toward cost savings. While the Minot location is included in the assessment, statements from both the Social Security Administration and Sen. John Hoeven’s office indicate that no final decisions have been made. The focus, they say, is on efficiency, not closure. Still, for those who rely on in-person services, the outcome of this review will be worth watching.
This week’s North Dakota Outdoors Webcast features education coordinator Jeff Long, who delves into the National Archery in the Schools Program. He’ll share insights about the program’s impact on students and what to expect at the upcoming state tournament in Minot. Whether you’re an avid follower of youth sports or just curious about local educational initiatives, this discussion highlights an engaging aspect of school activities and the skills they foster among students. Tune in for a closer look.
What does it mean for a nation to win? Not in sports or politics, but in the everyday lives of its people? That’s the question driving How Canada Wins, a new series exploring the ideas, ambition, and determination shaping the country’s future. Over the coming weeks, journalists will connect with leaders, visionaries, and advocates working to strengthen Canadian communities. The goal isn’t just to highlight challenges—it’s to spotlight solutions. Because a great nation isn’t built in theory; it’s built in action, one bold step at a time.
We’ll be watching this series closely from across the border. It strikes us as exactly what local media should be doing and it’s exactly what it used to do, too. Readers of our Ward County Independent column have seen the word “prosperity” often. And one more thing, What happens when a country feels attacked? It gathers up, and finds a way to respond. One outcome is certain from President Trump’s blusterous diplomacy and trade war tactics — it’s inspiring nations to gather up and respond. If you read as much news as we do, you’re seeing the meta signs everywhere.
A trial involving the Dakota Access Pipeline is drawing significant attention as media organizations push for expanded access. Judge James Gion has restricted photography, video, and audio recording during the proceedings in Morton County, citing witness concerns. Media attorney Jack McDonald has filed a petition with the North Dakota Supreme Court for greater transparency, arguing that public interest in the case warrants the ability to view the trial. As jury selection unfolds, the trial promises to address important free speech issues amid a backdrop of controversy between Energy Transfer and Greenpeace.
Motor vehicle accidental deaths numbered 173. Mrs. Watts explains that although the state highway patrol lists 169 traffic fatalities last year, her report includes persons who died within the state from accidents occurring outside North Dakota.
Why we published it: Not only were the highways more dangerous, pretty much everything around us was also a way to kick on -- railroads, poison, farm machinery. It's no wonder we asked the government to start protecting us a little more!
The American Republic Plans of Protection Will Be Explained to Individuals and Families...
Why we published it: This wasn't the beginning of private health insurance, but it is the first example we've noticed.
In his most recent communique, Burdick complains about the fast paced Washington circuit as being too much for him. He is referring, of course, to the banquet and cocktail agenda which no doubt would be too much for anyone.
Why we published it: This editorial was lightly suspicious, but supportive. And the lesson is an important one -- let politicians be politicians and do political things. And that includes the cocktail circuit to nurture the relationships that grease the political machine.
Butter being manufactured in North Dakota’s creameries is better than ever, and the improvement, in part at least, is due to the technical help given to the industry in recent years by the dairy laboratory of NDAC Experiment Station.
Why we published it: That's some tasty government research we can get behind... now, if only we could get some local creameries back to apply what we learned!
Give your winter-weary spirits a lift. Take a look at the new Evinrudes. They're loaded with power ... loaded for fun ... whisper quiet and smooth from the slowest trolling to full throttle.
Why we published it: The calendar said February, the advertising said spring is coming!
“We are in receipt of your letter regarding a past due account for subscriptions from the years 1928-1935 in the amount of $14.00. We wish to advise that this item was written off the books some years ago, but wish to say that we appreciate your sincerity in the matter in wishing to make payment. We might also say that in this world of ours, it is a pleasure to come in contact with there [sic] are more people like you in the old world.”
Why we published it: If you're having trouble seeing that people are generally good and decent, here's a little example to draw from. And live by.
On Nature’s Code
“It has not escaped our notice that the specific pairing we have postulated immediately suggests a possible copying mechanism for the genetic material.”
— James Watson and Francis Crick, 1953, on their landmark scientific paper on the discovery of D.N.A.
