On This Day
On this day, Hitler didn’t waste a disaster to set himself up further in power, the U.S. made it Constitutionally official — two terms only, and the American Indian Movement (AIM) set up shop on a South Dakota reservation. In Minot, we were against free, socialized parking, we needed better planning to balance all our needs with the money we had to deliver, and there was history on the earliest picture of Minot.
On this day in 1933, the Reichstag building in Berlin, the seat of the German parliament, was set on fire, an event that Adolf Hitler used as a pretext to consolidate power and suppress political opposition, leading to the rise of the Nazi regime.
On this day in 1951, the Twenty-second Amendment to the United States Constitution was ratified, limiting presidents to two terms in office, a reaction to Franklin D. Roosevelt’s four-term presidency.
On this day in 1973, members of the American Indian Movement (AIM) occupied the town of Wounded Knee, South Dakota, on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, protesting against the U.S. government’s treatment of Native Americans and demanding the fulfillment of treaty obligations.

A push for greater government transparency is back on the table in North Dakota. A newly resubmitted ballot measure aims to open lawmaker communications to the public, restrict legislators from voting on their own salaries, and impose a four-year lobbying ban after leaving office. Originally submitted and withdrawn earlier this month, the petition now has new sponsors, including former gubernatorial candidates. If approved for circulation, supporters must collect over 31,000 signatures to bring the measure before voters in 2026. Meanwhile, another petition seeks to loosen North Dakota’s vehicle window tinting laws.

A newly formed Wisconsin Assembly committee, dubbed the GOAT Committee, is already making waves before even holding its first meeting. Vice Chair Rep. Shae Sortwell has launched an investigation into diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs in local governments, requesting five years’ worth of records from cities across the state—many of them Democratic strongholds. The move has drawn pushback from Democratic committee members, who say they weren’t consulted and question the committee’s authority. As political tensions rise, the debate over DEI spending is becoming a new battleground in Wisconsin governance.
Why does this matter in North Dakota? Creation of a similar DOGE-like committee was approved by the ND House. It will be interesting to see if the ND Republican’s follow their Wisconsin colleagues into witch-hunt territory or keep the task force focused on efficiency. Read about North Dakota’s DOGE committee here. Get the full story on what’s happening in Wisconsin linked below.
A high-stakes courtroom battle is unfolding in Mandan, North Dakota, where pipeline giant Energy Transfer is suing Greenpeace for $300 million over its role in the Dakota Access Pipeline protests. The case, deemed the most complex civil trial in state history, could have far-reaching consequences for free speech and protest rights. Energy Transfer argues Greenpeace orchestrated delays and financial harm, while Greenpeace insists the protests were indigenous-led and that the lawsuit aims to silence activism. With a five-week trial ahead, the jury’s decision could set a powerful legal precedent.

Minot city council has decided to install 125 more parking meters in the downtown district in an effort to make more parking space available.
Why we published it: Oh how wise we were. It seems our forefathers understood the economic principles of supply, demand, and pricing. And they knew they could "create" more parking through the simple act of charging for it. No need to build giant parking garages, just add meters and the public will start to sort themselves out. Did you know North Dakota is the only state that makes on-street parking meters illegal? That happened after this event above. It's exactly like socialized, government mandated, publicly-funded (but not free) parking. Except the streets aren't free to build, and neither is keeping them clean.
Right now Minot is in the throes of great optimism and tremendous planning. We need a new swimming pool according to those who like to swim. We need new playground areas and equipment. We need a new YMCA. We need new street lighting. We need to widen Valley Street and Second Street NW and should do it right away. Fourth Avenue South should be widened also if we are to grow as a city. We need at least two new school buildings.
Why we published it: The eternal battle between what we want and what we can afford. It's interesting that the solution the editor offered was a planning board. Today we have one, but you would be hard pressed to find a dollar amount attached to any of the cases they consider. Hmmm?
Many people who come into the Independent office are interested in the 1887 picture of Minot which hangs on the wall here. That picture was taken in the autumn of 1887. The Independent here presents a picture of the city which was taken in the early spring of the same year, probably the oldest existing picture of Minot’s Main street.
Why we published it: Anybody have a version of this one that's been reproduced with slightly updated technology? We'd love to see it now that we know the history of it 🙂
