On This Day
On this day in 1776, we weren’t turning back. In 1802, we started training for the fights ahead. In 1826, on the 50th anniversary of our country’s founding we lost two Presidents, and on this day in 1939 Lou Gehrig’s class was on display as his told us about his glass that was way more than half full. In 1918 Minot, the circus was packing three trains into Minot, and a politician was on the way, too, also by train. Germany wanted the world before they surrendered, and it was time for the government to step up for veterans.
On this day in 1776, the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence, marking the birth of the United States as an independent nation, with Thomas Jefferson’s eloquent words proclaiming the colonies’ freedom from British rule.
On this day in 1802, the United States Military Academy at West Point officially opened, establishing a premier institution for training military leaders, which would go on to play a critical role in the development of the U.S. Armed Forces.
On this day in 1939, Lou Gehrig, the legendary baseball player, delivered his famous “Luckiest Man on the Face of the Earth” speech at Yankee Stadium, following his diagnosis with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a moment that remains deeply etched in American sports history.
Born and Died: Calvin Coolidge, (Born, 1872) 30th President of the United States known for his laissez-faire approach to governance, Thomas Jefferson, (Died, 1826) Third President of the United States and principal author of the Declaration of Independence, Malia Obama, (Born, 1998) American public figure and daughter of former President Barack Obama, John Adams, (Died, 1826) Second President of the United States and Founding Father, Neil Simon, (Born, 1927) American playwright known for his comedic plays such as “The Odd Couple,” James Monroe, (Died, 1831) Fifth President of the United States known for the Monroe Doctrine, Geraldo Rivera, (Born, 1943) American journalist and television personality known for his investigative reporting, Bob Ross, (Died, 1995) American painter and television host known for “The Joy of Painting,” Barry White, (Died, 2003) American singer-songwriter known for his deep voice and romantic songs.

NOTHING ELSE LIKE IT IN ALL OF EARTH'S HISTORY
Why we published it: The laundry list of performers is long and include no less than 3 Herds of Elephants! When is the last time you saw a production in Minot that required three trains to deliver?

Subject: "Fundamentals" in which Mr. Bryan discusses man's relation to government, to society, and to God."
Why we published it: William Jennings Bryan was a noted politician of the era who also served as Secretary of State. He ran three times for President including twice against tickets that included Teddy Roosevelt in 1900 and 1908.

The club is to be used to assist in placing men in positions for which they will be best fitted. The plan of looking after our soldiers is a good one, but perhaps it is so big and so important that the government should attend to these men.
Why we published it: ". . . that the government should attend to these men." Indeed.

Germany wants peace and she is modest about it. Here are just a few of the little things that she is hankering for: Great Britain must turn over her entire fleet and transfer the fortress of Gibralter to Spain . . . Great Britain, France and the United States must pay Germany a war indemnity of forty-five billion dollars . . .
Why we published it: "Hold your breath till we count it." It seems our editor wasn't above a little snark when it came to the country that cost so much to so many. There's a note of war-time diplomacy worth learning here... and it's the demands of a war-effort that's on its last legs may be akin to the last spasm of a dying animal.
