On this day in 1863, Gettysburg ended. On this day in 1886, the automobile became, and on this day in 1988 Iran had a legitimate huge gripe against the U.S. In 1913 Minot, there was soooo much local news. And it was full of hopefully-learnable lessons and sheer entertainment 😉

On this day in 1886, Karl Benz officially unveiled the Benz Patent-Motorwagen, the world’s first automobile powered by an internal combustion engine, paving the way for the modern automotive industry and revolutionizing personal transportation.
On this day in 1988, the United States Navy warship USS Vincennes mistakenly shot down Iran Air Flight 655 over the Persian Gulf, killing all 290 aboard, an incident that significantly heightened tensions between the U.S. and Iran.

Why we published it: Today we call these honor flights. And the tradition is older than we may have guessed.
London. -- A retrospective reivew of the performances of the militant suffragettes of England -- the "wild women," the "bashi bazoukesses," the "brawler squads," as they have variously called -- i s startling for the pyramid of offenses, crazy and grave, which they have perpetrated with the idea of securing the vote -- an orgy of arson, assault, riot, mischief, self imprisonment, immolation and suffering.
Why we published it: First of all, Bashi Bazoukesses! What that we would see such creative pejoratism form today's pundits. But also, look at how those who are fighting for rights are painted down through the years. The lengths that desperate people will go to for their beliefs and the manner in which they will be painted -- especially by those who enjoy those same rights -- is a theme that is circling back in our own moment.
Today Schauer, the most talked about minor leaguer in the country, is worth his full season's salary several times over every time he is billed to pitch, as well as being worth $10,000 to the coffers of the club that was willing to chance $40 or $50 in training expenses.
Why we published it: The most talked about pitcher in the country could be had for about $330,000 current-day dollars. While Schauer was originally from Wisconsin, he was discovered while playing in the North Dakota and not far from Minot.
It's a little hard to separate the sheep from the goats, and we fear that if the minions of the law were to order every man found standing on the street to move on, they'd occasionally disturb the peace of the editor of the Reporter, as well as many most excellent citizens.
Why we published it: The crux of the story is comment on local media taking down the people of its own place, in the parlance of their time, they were "knocking." But the lesson for our time may be more subtle and in the closing... there's a price to be paid by lumping everyone together, and it's the innocent and upstanding that pay it most.
This good state of ours needs more trees. A systematic movement to plant and care for trees all over he state would mean millions of dollars to this state, thru increased value of real estate, modification of the climate and healthfulness.
Why we published it: Our humble, and largely unacknowledged servant... the tree. We notice. Do you?
Uncle Sam evidently does not propose to stand for his publishers calling a spade a spade.
Why we published it: Well, if we think our own time is the only time in which the government was hostile to the media, here is an example to teach us otherwise.
The Imperator, latest and biggest wonder of the sea, attracted much notice when she reached the port of New York safely with her 4,280 souls aboard . . . Notice the numerous lifeboats. There are eighty-three in all, enough to carry all the passengers and crew in case of accident.
Why we published it: Less than 15 months after the Titanic sank... how do you say you learned the lessons without saying "Titanic"? This is how. And how quickly we moved on to the next biggest glorious ship... There's also a lesson in success . . . there are fewer stories told about reaching port than when the outcome is the opposite.
Remarkable evidence as to the effect of the telephone upon the minds of people using it was given in a trial here. Police Commissioner Shaw informed the president that he had not been consulted by Mr. Davis and the President retaliated by saying that he did not intend to work in conjunction with the commissioner of police, because he did not believe that Mr. Shaw favored enforcement of certain laws.
Why we published it: From back when matters between the elected officials and police where plain and simple... Apparently, we should assume that this is a relationship that is bound to make news form time to time, even in our own time.
What purpose does the Chautauqua serve that has caused it to become a popular institution in our national life? The best answer to this question is that there is a desire in the minds and hearts of most people for better things. It is therefore worth while to spend time and money to hear the messages brought by the various speakers. Frequently questions of deep current interest are discussed and the public conscience awakened and thus public opinion formed.
Why we published it: Seems like we might could use a good Chautauqua.
Dahl started down a rope into a seventy-five foot well. He had not gone far when he was overcome by gas and became unconscious. He was hanging by one food when Gotaas lowered himself and attached another rope tied to Dahl. The support rope tied to Dah gave way and he fell to the bottom, but so gradually that he was not seriously injured. A team of horses was attached to the rope and he was drawn to the surface.
Why we published it: Now that's a story worthy of making the papers!
