Cities used to be judged mainly by their economy and infrastructure, but today’s world demands a new approach. As climate change and technological advances reshape our landscapes, cities must pivot to resilience and adaptability to stay competitive. Consider Miami—a city taking proactive steps against climate risks—which now stands as a model for attracting investment. With AI and advanced tech paving the way, cities that embrace these changes will thrive, safeguarding both their citizens and future economic viability.

Why does this matter in Minot? We’re competing in this pond, too. And our flood protection project is an example of these adaptations. Get the full story from the World Economic Forum on the factors that should be shaping our future decisions.

Hockey has a special place in the hearts of North Dakotans, and this year, one of Minot’s own is being recognized for his contributions to the sport by the ND High School Hockey Hall of Fame. Bob Gillen, the manager of Minot’s MAYSA Arena has also been the state’s highs school statistician and administrator of the ND High School Hockey website for decades. Property taxes are front and center at Montana’s Capitol, where surging bills are squeezing homeowners and renters alike. Lawmakers are weighing solutions that could bring relief — but the paths diverge. Governor Gianforte’s proposal targets second homes and high-end properties, aiming to shift the tax burden while rewarding primary residents. Meanwhile, Democrats are pushing for credits and progressive rates to ease the load on middle- and lower-income Montanans. Both sides agree action is needed, but the debate over fairness and strategy will shape how relief takes form.

Why does this matter in Minot? When it comes to property taxes, a humble approach — where we didn’t assume we have the absolute solution might make sense. That means we need to look around at what others are doing. This article from Montana does just that.

Bitter cold couldn’t chill the spirits at Vinterfest 2025 in Bismarck, where families found warmth in creativity and community. The North Dakota Heritage Center turned into a snowy gallery, hosting grand sculptures by Team North Dakota Snow Sculpting. One highlight, the “Scandinavian Snow Globe,” captured the essence of Scandinavian art in an intricate swirl of flora and fauna. Despite the challenges of warm weather and scarce snow, the team triumphed, crafting beauty that delighted all ages. Indoors, greenery crowns offered a cozy refuge, ensuring something for everyone.

State firefighters in North Dakota may soon find early retirement within their reach, as lawmakers review a pivotal bill aimed at aligning their benefits with other public safety officials. House Bill 1112 seeks to allow these brave professionals, currently eligible for retirement at 65, to retire up to a decade earlier. It’s a recognition not just of the physical toll firefighting takes, but a tool to help keep North Dakota competitive in attracting and retaining these public servants.

Get the full story from Mary Steurer with the North Dakota Monitor. Bill details are below.

Reforming North Dakota’s ballot measure process isn’t a headline-grabber, but it should be. House Concurrent Resolution 3003 proposes requiring a 60% supermajority to amend the state constitution—a sensible safeguard for our most consequential laws. Critics argue this undermines direct democracy, but it’s worth considering: should laws be shaped by fleeting majorities or broad consensus?

Rob Port with Inforum has the full commentary on this issue that’s among the more pressing issues facing North Dakota. Follow the link below to read. CR 3003 details are below.

HCR 3003

Mr. Dorman does not believe that any of the ships yet made are practical and thinks when the successful ship is made, it will be a very simple affair, so much so that people will wonder that they di not think of it sooner.

Why we published it: 1909 was six years after the Wright brothers claimed the fame, but there was much fortune still on the table. And inventive minds were working taking their share of it everywhere.

Recently he was responsible for an order which among other things compelled officers to ride thirty miles, three days in succession in the way of a practical practice. There was any amount of kicking over the order, and the president to show that the order was not a hard one, mounted his horse early one morning last week, and seventeen hours later, he returned to the White House, having covered ninety-eight miles during that time.

Why we published it: Now that's a President!

It is thought that some of the stock strayed away and the young man mounted a horse and went after them. Becoming lost in the storm, he must have fallen off his horse, which returned the next day with its bridle on. Camm was in a standing position when found, and his body frozen stiff.

Why we published it: Our own local Per Hansa gives us yet another indelible image of the grit, tenacity, and sometimes luck required to survive the prairie. Giants in the Earth was published in 1924; it's possible our own William Camm was among the inspiration for the ending.

Since writing my letter of yesterday, I have found that Velva has a committee here in Bismarck working for the Normal School to be located at Velva in McHenry County. The cheap argument advanced in favor of their proposition as against that of Minot, is that Minot is too immoral to be a fit place for a Normal school.

Why we published it: We've got our eyes you, Velva! 🙂
