On This Day
On this day, Soccer hit the airwaves for the first time, the allies were making a flanking move, and the Supreme Court gave us a decision we’re still fighting about 50 years later. In Minot, our local news had the story of a deadly Montana fight, the Chamber became the Chamber, our and our editor was winning accolades.

Premier Scott Moe’s ambitious plans for a robust canola industry have just hit a major snag. The Federative Co-operatives Ltd.-AGT Food plant, once poised to transform canola into renewable diesel, has seen its venture indefinitely paused. Following Bunge Ltd.’s takeover of Viterra, jobs have been lost, and dreams shuttered—not exactly a winning streak for Saskatchewan. Political wrangling and economic headwinds aside, this downturn is a potent reminder: in the world of big agriculture, even sky-high ambitions can sometimes fall flat.
Why does this matter in Minot? When you step to the economic development plate and swing for grand slams, failure is a reality that arrives more often than success. If only there were another way to play baseball. Murray Mandryk has the full story on our northerly neighbor’s canola at bat.
Meet “The Architects,” a spirited group of four homeschooled kids in Minot, North Dakota, who are diving headfirst into the world of robotics. Led by the enthusiastic 14-year-old Divine Okonkwo, this team teaches us that teamwork and perseverance are the blueprints for success. As they gear up for their first competition this Saturday, they’ll be showcasing not just their mechanical marvels but also the camaraderie and creativity that have blossomed along the way. Join them at Minot State for a glimpse into innovation crafted by young minds.

The ND legislature is debating a bill written to reduce the years needed for a lifetime state teaching license from 30 to 20, aiming to cut costs and help retain educators. Advocates say it acknowledges the dedication teachers give, potentially saving them around $1,000. However, the state’s licensing board argues that ongoing education is key to maintaining professional standards. With teacher shortages pressing, opinions are divided—does less formal reeducation compromise quality or simply respect seasoned educators’ experience?

Senate Bill 2104, pitched by Sen. Todd Beard, seeks to ensure school districts adhere to state education laws, proposing a 2% cut in state aid for non-compliance. This move comes after a confrontation over transgender student rights in Fargo. Proponents argue for accountability, while critics warn of hefty financial hits and potential misuse. As the debate unfolds, schools and policymakers tread the complex path of state and federal laws with caution and concern.

The membership of the new organization now numbers nearly a thousand. The new organization hopes to benefit every walk in life. It is strictly non-partisan and its sole object is to further the interests of Minot.
Why we published it: One hundred and eleven years later, the Association of Commerce, now known as the Minot Area Chamber EDC is still with us.

If any mistakes are made in the future, it will be our own fault. Let us profit by the errors of the past. Let us study the conditions as they are and speculate on those that are to come. If anything is wrong with our city, let us meet at the headquarters of the Minot Association of Commerce and thresh it out. We can never do any good by remaining on the outside complaining.
Why we published it: This editorial was published in response to the formation of the Association of Commerce, and if it was worth celebrating then, the fact that it's still around today is worth equal celebration and attention.

The editor of the Independent was honored by the North Dakota newspapermen at the state press meeting held at Bismarck last week, be being made President of the North Dakota Press Association.
Why we published it: Having become regular readers of this fine periodical over recent months, we can say this was a well-deserved honor!

Hoot Mon! Dinna ye know that the Scots were going to entertain? The Minot Burns club will hold their annual celebration on the anniversary of the birth of the great Scottish bard at the home of the president, Wm. Hetherton and his good wife, Monday night, Jan. 26.
Why we published it: This sounds like a fine celebration, and makes us wonder where our Minot's great Scots celebrating these days? If their out there, perhaps we should make them honorary Scandinavians and invite them to Hostfest!

When they go outside, Gately secured a Winchester from his wagon near by and leveled it at Wilhelm, who turned and started back into the store, drawing an automatic revolver as he did so and firing shots over his shoulder. The shots were simultaneous. Gately dropped, and reloading his rifle as he lay, fired again at Wilhelm who had mortally wounded him with a second shot. All four shots took effect. Wilhelm was killed instantly and Gateley lived but a few minutes.
Why we published it: The West was a hard place, and no place to leave a debt unpaid.
A Time for Action
“We have talked long enough in this country about equal rights. We have talked for a hundred years or more. It is time now to write the next chapter, and to write it in the books of law.”
— Lyndon B. Johnson, March 15, 1965
