In Bismarck, opportunity comes with a high price tag. The city has three Class D liquor licenses up for bid, each with a minimum price of $200,000. Scarcity makes them valuable, but they do come with added flexibility—unlike other permits that tie alcohol sales to food or limit options, Class D licenses allow full sales without added restrictions. Bids are due September 16, with winners chosen by the highest qualifying offers. For entrepreneurs eyeing Bismarck’s bar and restaurant scene, the minimum price to compete has been set. Morgan DeVries with KX News has the full story.

Sunflowers are having a moment. New USDA data shows U.S. farmers planted 24% more acres than expected this season, with North Dakota leading the way and South Dakota posting the biggest jump. Strong prices and steady demand for sunflower oil have driven the surge, offering growers a brighter outlook compared to corn or soybeans. And it’s not just about economics—the fields are in full bloom, drawing tourists with maps, photo tips, and even seed giveaways. For now, sunflowers are both business and beauty. Jenny Schlecht with InForum has the full story.

In the heart of America’s honey belt, beekeepers are facing losses that threaten both tradition and the food supply it supports. Families like the Hulls in west-central Minnesota, who have kept bees for more than a century, are watching half their colonies collapse year after year. The culprits are complex—mites, chemicals, climate shifts, poor forage—and often defy easy answers. What’s clear is that without healthier hives, the ripple effects extend far beyond honey jars, touching crops and communities nationwide. Kevin Wallevand with InForum has the full story.

Hope Magelky’s journey has taken her from Dickinson to the world stage. Now living in Bismarck, she’s making history as the first North Dakota woman to play for the U.S. Women’s National Sled Hockey Team. Magelky started in net for the opening game of the inaugural World Para Ice Hockey Women’s Championships, where the U.S. cruised past Australia 8-0. With pool play continuing this week, she and her teammates are chasing more than wins—they’re building a foundation for the future of the sport. Luke Gamble with KFYR has the full story.

College students aren’t just wrestling with midterms and essays anymore—they’re up against a flood of misinformation delivered through the very apps they use most. At Georgia State University, one professor decided that ignoring this reality was no longer an option. By weaving short, fact-checking modules into a massive American Government course, instructors gave students the tools to question viral claims and shady sources. The results? Stronger critical thinking, sharper digital literacy, and a reminder that even small steps can strengthen democracy.

Modernizing a nuclear arsenal isn’t just about weapons—it’s about people, communities, and trust. At a town hall in Minot, Air Force leaders laid out the scope of the Sentinel missile replacement project, a decades-long effort to replace the aging Minuteman system. Residents pressed for answers on health, safety, and land use, especially with lingering concerns over cancer risks from past service. Officials pledged transparency, safer systems, and continued readiness, while acknowledging the massive scale: 400 new missiles and a timeline stretching into the 2040s. Jill Schramm with Minot Daily News has the full story.

The Minot North Sentinels will open their season carrying the weight of high expectations. Ranked first in the Division AA preseason poll, they lead a field that includes Kindred, Red River, Central Cass, and St. Mary’s. But for head coach Jacob Holmen, the focus isn’t on headlines—it’s on preparation. With most of last year’s roster returning and a lingering drive after a semifinal loss, the Sentinels enter 2024 with confidence, discipline, and a chip on their shoulder. Minot Daily News has the full story; view the rankings below.

When politics feels like little more than a shouting match, it’s easy to forget that the health of democracy depends on something deeper than laws and institutions. Integrity—not policy positions or partisan wins—is the true safeguard of the Constitution. Without it, even the strongest legal protections can be bent or bypassed. From court-packing to selective prosecution, the dangers are real. The question is whether citizens still expect—and demand—honesty from those in power. India has become one of Russia’s biggest oil customers since the war in Ukraine began, but pressure from Washington is forcing a careful recalibration. U.S. tariffs on Indian imports have doubled to 50%, and New Delhi is signaling compliance by trimming—but not abandoning—its Russian crude purchases. The cuts are modest, more symbolic than substantial, as Indian refiners still lean heavily on Moscow’s supply. The standoff underscores how trade, energy, and geopolitics remain tightly intertwined in today’s global economy.

On This Day

On this day in 1883, the mythology of the South Pacific was fully realized. In 1928, we were going to try and do it without war, and in 2008, Barrack Obama broke a glass ceiling. In 1908 Minot, we were planning for our big fall event. Our local editors were tired of paying interest, hunters were giving hunters a bad name, and winter had already made an appearance.

On this day in 1883, the eruption of Krakatoa, a volcanic island in Indonesia, culminated in a series of massive explosions, causing widespread destruction, tsunamis, and significant loss of life. The eruption was one of the deadliest and most violent volcanic events in recorded history.

On this day in 1928, the Kellogg-Briand Pact was signed in Paris by 15 nations, including the United States and France, renouncing war as a means of resolving international disputes and promoting peaceful conflict resolution.

On this day in 2008, Barack Obama was formally nominated as the Democratic candidate for President of the United States at the Democratic National Convention in Denver, Colorado, marking a historic moment as he would go on to become the first African American president.

All our ice cream is made by us and is without a jelatin from pure Jersey cream from our own Jersey farm. This insures a uniformity of product which cannot be equaled by any other concern in the city. You can only imagine the perfection of our ice cream, until you try it. That is realization.

Why we published it: Local soda combined with local ice cream... Now we can get the exact same soda and ice cream throughout the land and we call it progress? We're suspicious of this claim.

The Minot schools will be closed on the afternoons of the two days, Sept. 28 and 29, and the children will take a prominent part in the parade. A living flag will be one of the features. The fire department, Co. D in uniform and many other attractions will be in the parade. Heine’s Little German Band has promised to get out in full uniform. The Minot Metropolitan Band and the High School band will dispense music during the two days.

Why we published it: Today, our "harvest festival" has taken on a distinctively Scandinavian flare, but many of the same traditions remain!

Each and every vote will cost one penny. The candidates or friends of the candidates may cast their votes by paying one penny for each vote to the secretary of the Commercial club, for which they will receive credit by receipt.

Why we published it: Just a little curious content from our former harvest festival. Also, it's the earliest reference to the "Commercial" club (which later became the Chamber of Commerce) that we've noticed.

Already many carloads of material including the fifty miles of pipe have been ordered. The pipes will be laid on top of the ground, with the exception of where they cross the highways.

Why we published it: It's a good thing we've updated our franchise agreements.... It's easy to imagine the hard lesson we learned about laying natural gas pipelines above ground.

Notwithstanding the efforts that are being made by the State’s Attorney and the game wardens, thousands upon thousands of ducks in the vicinity of Rice Lake are being slaughtered by the hoggish pot hunters. Aug. Zethren, proprietor of the Unique Cash Grocery, owns a farm near the Lake, and Sunday evening he saw two sportsmen (?) out in one of the lakes, shooting down the ducks as fast as they could load their guns. Scores of them had fallen in and around the slough. Upon the approach of Mr. Zethren, they left and neglected to take along quite a good sized pile of ducks. It seems too bad that such game hogs cannot be brought to justice. They ought to be given a month for every duck they kill out of season. A man who will violate the game law is liable to do something worse.

Why we published it: If you ever think Game and Fish is too strict, remember that when they didn't exist, we couldn't be trusted to hunt and take game responsibly. And we had our chance.

Ward county ought to be placed on a cash basis. This would be a good business proposition, and one that any ordinary man ought to see through without any trouble. How can this be done? In the first place the Independent believes that we can dispense with the building of some of the bridges, and postpone the grading of some of the more expensive roads for a short time. Reduce the levy for a bridge and road fund for a short time to a minimum and increase the general fund. If this is done Ward county will soon be on a cash basis.

Why we published it: Our local editors were consistent through the decades on this point... they wanted us out from under the interest bills. And that which we can't pay for up front, we can't have.

A hard frost in the Mouse River valley did considerable damage to the late flax, corn and some garden truck Friday night. We have heard of no special damage being done on the prairie however. J. E. Ellsberry, who has thirty-five acres of fine corn which he hoped would mature, had his hopes blighted and will cut the corn for fodder. It will not be a total loss, for the fodder will make excellent feed. Late potatoes looked pretty sick Saturday morning. Frost at this time of the year is quite a common thing in the valley and was not unexpected.

Why we published it: In case you need a reminder... winter is coming. And in 1908, it had already made an appearance by this date.
