The original sample of the American flag, made by Betsy Ross herself, and which is now in possession of Edward L. Rowan, custodian of the Elks’ Home of this city, was on exhibition at the meeting during the afternoon. Betsy Ross, according to history, when asked by George Washington to make the first American flag, first made several small samples from silk, showing the thirteen stripes and the original thirteen stars.
