Joseph A. James, an executive of a packing company at West Fargo, was arrested Thursday charged with the shooting of Eddie Oftelle, 13-year-old boy who was playing a Hallowe’en prank around James’ residence. The charge of shot entered the boy’s eyes, entirely destroying his sight. James said he heard some boys around his house and fired a shot into the air. He said his shot gun went off accidentally, wounding the youth.

Yesterday in this column, our local editor was reminiscing about the Halloween traditions of his younger years. We're sure he didn't mean "last year", but here is news that suggests he might have. It's no wonder there was a push to change the nature of the holiday... having your eye shot out was reserved for Christmas?
