Hearings Scheduled for Proposed TENORM Tracking and Disposal Rule Changes

TENORM is the language used to describe the radioactive material that is occasionally produced in the drilling process. The Department of Health is proposing we raise the landfill limits on certain types of low-risk radioactive material so it can be disposed of in-state at specially permitted landfills.

The North Dakota Department of Health (NDDoH) reminds the public that information sessions and hearings on proposed TENORM rule changes are scheduled for this month. The informational meetings will begin at 5:30 p.m., with the official comment hearing beginning at 7:00 p.m.

The hearings are scheduled as follows:

  • Williston, January 20, 2015; Williston Area Recreation Center, 822 18th Street East
  • Bismarck, January 21, 2015; Environmental Training Center, 2639 East Main Avenue
  • Fargo, January 22, 2015; Fargo Public Safety Building, 4630 15th Avenue North

As a reminder, the dates of these meetings were changed to one week later than the originally announced dates.

Representatives from Argonne National Laboratory will be in attendance to present information about the TENORM study and answer questions from the public.The public will be able to make comments on the proposed rules at these meetings and can send written comments to the NDDoH through February 6.
