On This Day | A Growing Park District

The Independent well remembers when the first property was purchased for park purposes when $13,000 was expended for that beautiful wooded area that is now known as Roosevelt park. Some Minot folks thought the city was getting extravagant in spending such a large sum. Today it is worth several times what was paid for it. A little later an additional tract was added to Roosevelt park at a cost of $2,000 and during the time that W. S. Shaw was mayor, the city of Minot turned over to the park district 14 acres adjoining.

Why We Chose It
The framing of this is interesting in that the land acquired by the Park District was — in part — justified by it’s increasing value. We don’t typically think of public land acquisitions in these terms anymore. Perhaps because we’ve rarely observed divestment or because once on the public rolls they’re no longer assessed for value?
Either way, it’s a tangential point to the larger story that Minot’s Park District has long been a point of community pride.
