At a meeting of the city council Monday night the Ward County INDEPENDENT as declared the official paper of the city of Minot, all of the alderman voting for it. This is quite important for the INDEPENDENT, inasmuch as all notices for bids and other notices relating to city affairs will hereafter appear in this paper.

Why We Chose It

These decisions were (and remain) no small thing to a publishing business. But with information sharing now being radically different, the publishing businesses protecting an antiquated practice that may no longer be serving the public… that means the writing is on the wall with regards to the future of this revenue source. And two other points are equally notable… first, the city had an official newspaper. This would at some point later transition to exclusively a “County” newspaper, which would have simplified things… no “county” and “city” official newspapers.

And perhaps most notable of all, the selection was made by the Alderman instead of the voters. We’ve not found reference to it yet, but there’s no doubt that at some point this arrangement created a conflict. And the obvious one — favorable political coverage for favorable consideration in the selection of “official” newspapers. That this selection practice was changed out for voters is a sign of how smart we were in the past.
