On This Day | An Editor’s Perspective on North Dakota

Outsiders, who speak with criticism of North Dakota, have not seen North Dakota—certainly not what I have seen. They have not laid their hands—as I have done—into that rich deep, black, earth, stretching practically unbroken from the southeastern section of the state to Minot and then east to Grand Forks; they have not felt the warm, bright sunshine falling on a thousand miles of waving grain, nor breathed the invigorating, health-giving air of the vast prairies. They have not seen the modern and beautiful schools, both of town and country, which are the visible reason for North Dakota’s low percentage of illiteracy, namely one and one-half percent. What is true of country and high schools is also true of the character of the buildings a the seven higher institutions of learning. It cannot be possible, either, that critics met — as I me — a highly intelligent and progressive class of just fine folks, in city and in country; people who have absolute faith in themselves and their state and what their state is capable of doing, and will do.
