We noticed in looking over one of the grammar school geographies, which we are sorry to state is commonly used in the schools of this state, that North Dakota west of the 100 meridian, is attributed as being in the dry belt. Think of it. If the author of that geography could have been here recently he certainly would have made arrangements to have that part of his book changed immediately.

Why We Chose It
Our local editor took umbrage with what they saw as a slight against North Dakota, and they made a good point: care should go into choosing curriculums our students are taught. And also, with a larger data set to review, we can now say those geography writers may have been closer to correct than our local editor. “Dry belt” may not be scientific term, but it captures our place on the landscape pretty well. And we all know one wet season does not determine a place’s climate.
