Minot city council by an 8-5 vote September 15 adopted a planning commission report recommending improvement of US 83 in Minot from 11 ave NW to 11 ave SW and on the viaduct, and received a letter from State Highway Department Chief Engineer M. P. Wynkoop saying the city should do nothing on the viaduct until the rest of 83 in the city is widened.

Why We Chose It

We are once gain on the verge of a large and expensive highway 83 expansion, this time much further South than contemplated in 1952. It’s long past time that we ask what are the ripple on impacts of these decisions that make it easier and easier to speed through town… what if, one of those impacts is more and more outward expansion? What if we’re making it too easy to move further out? What if we’re no longer willing to pay to maintain all that outward expansion? Does that mean we should stop subsidizing convenience at the edge of town?

Also, we didn’t end up filling in the 6th street underpass; that was just a collective dream we all had — placing the burden of the crossing on the railroad. 🙂 And fortunately after years of flooding during only modest storms, an adequate pump station is now in place to keep the water from filling it up.
