On This Day | Enthusiasm for North Dakota

The good note that they give tongue to now—the one that has more of promise in it than the story of a mammoth crop, itself—is that which tells of their gradual and steady abandonment of the practice of making farming and gambling combined, their main business. Under the hammer of adversity they have been beaten but not destroyed. They have been refined—for there is good gold in the minds and souls of the men in North Dakota—and the dross of the gambling fever has been hammered out. This year the man who looks closely sees that there is more land in rye, in oats, in barley, in potatoes, in fodder crops for dairy cows, that there is more poultry, more butterfat, more beef cattle than ever before. Indeed, such is their progress that some of them, well informed men, too, have the nerve to tell the world that, if the wheat crop had been a failure they would have carried on without noticing it much, living comfortably on other products. That spells a greater North Dakota. Great crops come—and go, and poor crops follow, but balanced farming has sustained mankind before ever the pyramids reared their apexes to the skies, or the wooden plow stirred the Nile mud to make Egypt the center of art, science and literature.—St. Paul Dispatch.
