The inverted gull wing design permitted the use of the large propeller and at the same time a shorter, lighter landing gear than if the straight wing had been used. At the same time the wing was positioned at the best angle to improve the aerodynamic wing root. Engineers found such a position offered the best compromise for drag between wing and fuselage.
