I regret that the suggestion of a third term has been made. * * * I will now say once for all, expressing a long-settled conviction, that I not only am not and will not be a candidate for a third term, but I would not accept a nomination for it if it were tendered me. My only ambition is to serve through my second term to the acceptance of my countrymen, whose generous confidence I so deeply appreciate, and then with them to do my duty in the ranks of private citizenship.

Why We Chose It
The editorial team at The Ward County Independent was no lover of President Roosevelt, so it seems likely this statement from President McKinley was brought back to point out the difference in Presidential precedent the two men were setting. The 1940 election — in which F.D.R. would be elected to a third term — was held November 5th of that year.
