Why We Chose It
This was the moment when road infrastructure proved its economic value dramatically, i.e. new investments created obvious and observable access to new markets, and the economic growth followed quickly. In our own time, this equation — what returns do we get from expanding road infrastructure — is harder to sus out. And we have a lot more roads to maintain to begin with. Do you suppose at some point we’ll have road infrastructure that’s more expensive to maintain than we have a budget for? Do you suppose if that day ever comes, the sound of questioning the investment will sound a little like property tax reform?
