On This Day | Our Responsibility

The U-Boats are rusty at Scapa Flow. No national enemy threatens. Only . . . smugness, coldness, indifference.
They are insidious foes. Fortified by those symbols of a failing faith in American destiny, our national economic problems are just that much harder of solving. Met with Courage, America’s traditional weapon, forged in a flame of idealism and tempered with the strength of constructive planning, those problems would be swiftly overcome.
To carry on . . . such is our larger duty to the thousands whose sacrifice preserved intact our American heritage. Should we fail them in that duty, our silent salute on Armistice Day becomes an idle, empty tribute.
