THE DAKOTA TERRITORY in the years between 1885 and 1894 is the setting of “The Land They Possessed,” a novel by Mary Worthy Breneman, published Sept. 18, by The Macmillian Company. During this period thousands of immigrants from the Ukraine came to the Dakota Territory, bringing their precious seed wheat in rough sacks, and eager for the freedom of the new land with its black and fertile earth.
