On This Day | Picking Bones in Minot’s Early Years

Main street, Minot, showing the old Leland hotel and in the street there were many wagons loaded with buffalo bones, which were picked up off the prairies near Minot. The early residents didn’t have many ways of making a living. Crops were poor. There was a little ranching being done, but very little farming. Residents of the village would drive out on the prairie and pick up the buffalo bones, all that remained of the “Monarchs of the Prairies.” They bring them to Minot, stack them up in great piles along the Great Northern right-of-way and sell them to Ed Kelley or Olof Olson, whoever bid the highest. The bones were shipped in car lots to St. Louis, Mo., and used in the sugar refineries.
