On This Day | Polio Season Comes in Mild

However this summer one new county was added to the unit territory, Bottineau, and last week the authorities there reported to the state government that there have been 34 mild cases of polio in that county this summer but in none of these cases was there any actual paralysis of limbs.

Why We Chose It
“Polio” stories from this era are a bit like the crack in the sidewalk. They’re so common a modern reader hardly notices them. We haven’t published as many of these stories in this run through Minot’s history, but that’s not because they weren’t present. When the polio vaccine arrived in 1955, it is easy to see why parents viewed it as worth every risk; the alternative consequences were much scarier.
