A few days later, his parents received a message from the war department, informing them that their son has died of wounds while in battle. They went into mourning and the Minot newspapers carried a story of Howard’s life. An obituary which should prove pleasing to any man, could but he read it. And read it he did, for shortly after it was announced that the news of his death had been “somewhat exaggerated.” Howard recovered, got back into action and remained on duty to the end of the war and longer.
