On This Day | The Magnificent Redwood (and What We Failed to Consider)
Author
MinotVoice
He sends a clipping from a newspaper telling of a redwood tree 308 feet high and 20 feet in diameter at a point 5 feet above the ground, that would yield 360,000 board feet of salable lumber, enough to build 20 average sized homes. Just how remarkable this monster tree is can be appreciated when it is remembered that the average timber land in the eastern part of the United States yields only about 25,000 board feet of lumber to the acre. It would take every tree on nearly 15 acres of such land to produce as much lumber as this single redwood tree represents.

Why We Chose It
The editor is rightly marveling at one of nature’s most remarkable creations—and through an economic lens, no less. But his equation fails spectacularly; he forgets to include time. It likely took nature one to two thousand years to produce the abundance he imagines. As so often happens in economic analyses of natural resources or environmental consequences, the unseen variable is the one that matters most. Yet nature has a way of balancing the books in the end.
