On This Day | The Oldest Bridge in Ward County
Author
MinotVoice
The oldest bridge in Ward county, which has just been replaced by a fine new steel structure, was built across the Des Lacs river a mile northwest of Burlington forty years ago. James Johnson informs the Independent that the piling for the bridge consisted of oak poles, cut in the woods below Minot, while the planks were hauled 120 miles from Bismarck, that being the nearest railroad at the time. The bridge must have been well built for it has served well during all of these years.

Why We Chose It
Planks hauled 120 miles from Bismarck to build a bridge… they must have really wanted to get across that river! Also, “infantile paralysis” in the news 30 years before the vaccine, and concern over the growing size of government. That same $1,000,000 in government payroll would amount to $18,000,000 today. What we wouldn’t give if that were the actual dollar amount today 🙂
