On This Day | Water is for Fighting Over

North Dakota Governor John E. Davis has disputed the claim by Iowa Governor Herschel Loveless that the construction cost of the Garrison Diversion unit would be exorbitant.

Why We Chose It

Whiskey is for drinking, water is for fighting over. This was a soft exchange between Governor’s of the time at the beginning of what turned into a much longer fight, one that’s still rippling through Minot today. Of 1,000,000 acres of of Garrison Diversion irrigation that was touted, a little more than 100,000 was delivered. And as recently as a couple years ago, Minot was still fighting downstream interests over accessing the water for municipal services provided through the Northwest Area Water Supply project that was long held-up in the courts.
