There is more smoke than fire in this foreign debt discussion which is now filling European and American newspapers. The plain truth of it is, that even if we cancelled all of the debts which they owed us, the gentlemen who are building cabinets and trying to run things on the other side would have found some excuse for attack on us. The fact is we are a prosperous people, and back of this outcry is perhaps a little feeling of jealousy. There are very few of us after all, if our toes were worn out of our shoes and patches figure in the back of our trousers, can walk the street and applaud the well dressed person travelling happily along on the other side. It may after all, occur to our people abroad who are being annoyed in Paris and other cities, that America, where they earned the money, is a good place to spend it.

Why We Chose It
It has taken 100 years, but the tables on this topic — of national debt and success — are turned somewhat directly from where they were. We are still a big, prosperous, country, and we have the buying power to be bullies when it comes to trade, but we aren’t nearly as well-dressed as we used to be.
