Churchill’s Polar Bear Marathon earned its name this year, giving organizers and runners an up-close look at the animals that define the region. With Hudson Bay still unfrozen, more bears than usual lingered near town — and conservation officers warned it was the highest count they’d ever seen for late November. One Steinbach volunteer even watched a curious bear stroll up and steal a road marker before chewing it apart. Despite the wild backdrop, race day stayed calm, cold, and unforgettable for the 15 runners who took part. Shannon Dueck with Steinbach Online has the full story.
