BISMARCK, N.D. — The North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) has selected the winners for the fifth annual Name-A-Plow contest, in which North Dakota citizens submitted snowplow name ideas. North Dakota citizens submitted more than 800 snowplow name ideas that were considered in the contest. Names...

Roughly 50,000 North Dakota households will pay nothing in property taxes for the 2025 tax year, but some county officials are concerned about how limiting property taxes will affect their budgets. This year's Primary Residence Credit program offers up to $1,600 per household in property tax...

OMAHA — Critical that Nebraska has “stepped back” from its award-winning focus on economic development, Omaha area business leaders have launched an offensive plan to regain a competitive edge. The Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce today released a 24-page “Omaha Competes” report that urges major updates...

Times are tight, and North Dakotans know it. Groceries cost more, gas costs more, and holiday budgets shrank this year. But when it comes to giving, most people in the state haven’t pulled back. A new poll finds nearly 8 in 10 North Dakotans still call charitable giving important—and they’d rather send that money down the street than across the country. What’s driving that impulse, and is it enough to keep local nonprofits afloat? Michael Standaert with North Dakota News Cooperative has the full story.

In the America most business leaders grew up in, you competed on products, prices, and ideas. The government set the rules; the market picked the winners. But something has shifted. This year, CEOs have lined up at Mar-a-Lago with gold plaques and donation checks, while the White House has started taking stakes in private companies. Critics across the political spectrum are using words like “crony capitalism” and “state capitalism” to describe what’s happening. What does it mean when schmoozing becomes a business strategy? Maria Aspan with NPR has the full story.

If you run a company, you know who owns a piece of it. Your investors, your co-founders, maybe some early employees. But what about the federal government? A New York Times analysis finds the Trump administration has quietly poured more than $10 billion into equity stakes across private firms—mining companies, nuclear power, semiconductors. The logic is national security. The irony is that it’s coming from a party that usually preaches free markets. Whether it pays off for taxpayers is another question entirely. Brian Contreras with Inc. has the full story.

Before a county planner can write a single word of a staff report, they often spend hours just gathering the basics—old decisions, existing laws, planning documents buried in filing systems. It’s the kind of tedious groundwork that eats up days. In Washoe County, Nevada, officials helped build an AI tool to do that digging for them. The platform, now used by nearly 50 local governments, pulls from an agency’s own records to draft reports in minutes. It’s not flashy. It just gives people their time back. Kaitlyn Levinson with Route Fifty has the full story.

On This Day

On this day in 1783, George Washington set yet another American precedent we can be proud of. In 1823, A Visit from Saint Nicolas gave us an iconic opening line, and in 1913, the banking industry was getting a federal partner. In 1903 Minot, the news was of a Norwegian setting sail for further North, quarantines were the tool of public health before vaccines, pugilists were playing in Main Street theaters, and a New York commuter was making nationwide headlines.

On this day in 1783, George Washington resigned as commander-in-chief of the Continental Army, returning to civilian life and reinforcing the principle of civilian control of the military in the newly independent United States.

On this day in 1823, the poem “A Visit from St. Nicholas” (“‘Twas the Night Before Christmas”) was published anonymously in a New York newspaper, helping shape modern Christmas traditions and the image of Santa Claus.

On this day in 1913, the Federal Reserve Act was signed into law by President Woodrow Wilson, creating the Federal Reserve System as the central bank of the United States.

Officer Kimball was ordered to the home of Mr. McHenry in this city Saturday morning to quarantine the residence. Several members of the family have bad cases of small pox. There are quite a number of cases of small pox in the city and a good deal in the country . . . One young man who had the disease grew weary of staying at home and attended the country balls, peppering everyone.

Why we published it:

Some in our day gnash their teeth at the idea of a vaccine. It invites comparison to a time when public health was such a severe concern that the government was empowered to keep people from leaving their homes.

The Gjoa is classed as being one of the strongest and best vessels of the arctic fleet. It has a crew of seven men, is fitted with an auxiliary petroleum engine, and is equipped for a four years’ stay in the arctic regions.

Why we published it:

At the beginning of our three month stay in winter, a little arctic perspective seems like a good share 🙂

Mark Nelson and a pugilist from Iowa named Kinney, gave a fifteen round sparring exhibition in the opera house, Friday night after the theater, a crowd of 200 attending. The spectators say they got their money’s worth, and the fighters did too.

Why we published it:

Before the screens took over, the performers in the local theaters, and there were a few, had real live people on stage on the regular. These events are comparatively rare these days where the spoils of the entertaining professions go to dramatically fewer and fewer these days.

The dog, when he reaches the Grand Central station, bounds off the train and disappears in the crowd. In the evening he returns, and by watching for the Mount Vernon commuter, manages to find the train for that city.

Why we published it:

Loyal, responsible, and doing what it takes to get ahead!

On Getting Better at Living

“It is by living, and by living a great deal, that one learns to live. The ideas of the wise are the fruit of their experience; but one must eat the fruit before growing the tree. The art of living is neither careless nor severe; it is gentle, flexible, and profoundly human.”

— Anatole France, The Garden of Epicurus (1895)
