Saskatchewan fans have waited a long time for a night like this. Under the lights in Winnipeg, the Roughriders finally broke a 12-year championship drought and reclaimed the Grey Cup with a poised, physical performance that felt earned from the opening whistle. Trevor Harris delivered one of the best outings of his career, the defense came up with timely takeaways, and the Riders held off a furious late push from Montreal. After years of near-misses, the trophy is heading back to Regina. Taylor Shire with The Regina Leader-Post has the full story and game recap.
You’ve probably noticed them: rogue shopping carts scattered across parking lots like metal tumbleweeds. A psychologist spent months analyzing hundreds of confrontations between cart abandoners and those who call them out, and what he found is revealing. The excuses range from creative (“I’m creating jobs!”) to absurd (“I always return my cart—except this time”). But here’s the real insight: How we handle that simple choice says something meaningful about what we think we owe each other. It’s not really about the cart at all. Hannah B. Waldfogel with Behavioral Scientist has the full story and partial explanation.
North Dakota’s public colleges are seeing something many states would envy: growth. New enrollment numbers show more than 47,000 students across the University System, including online learners and high schoolers earning dual credit. What stands out most is the freshman bump — an eight-percent increase at a time when many states face steep declines. Leaders credit North Dakota’s demographics, but they’re also hoping the system’s academic offerings are part of the draw. And the momentum is strongest among high school students, where dual-credit participation is up 17 percent.
North Dakota’s Legacy Fund now holds more than $13 billion, yet big portions of it remain out of public view — and that secrecy is turning into a political fight. Lawmakers, lawyers, and everyday taxpayers are pressing for details about where billions in commingled investments actually go, especially overseas. State officials insist confidentiality rules tie their hands. A pending attorney general’s opinion and a new transparency website may soon force clarity, but for now, much of the public’s money remains behind a curtain. Patrick Springer with InForum has the full story.

In 1955 Minot, winter had just blown in, and the citizens and editors alike were trying to make sense of a justice system that seemingly failed them.

We left the courtroom, our first feeling of surprise now turning to one of anger. From the comments we heard from other spectators at the hearing, we had lots of company.
Why we published it: There is a notion that today is much more violent than past times, but this story is a reminder that our memories are not always honest with us. And sometimes senseless violent acts lead to outcomes in court that we do not believe serves justice. This isn't new, either.
Scenes such as the one above were common in Minot this week as winter weather blew in with a fury. Snow which started to fall over the weekend totalled better than 8 inches by Wednesday. The loose snow piled into some tall drifts on city streets, making traffic hazardous in many places. The .40 inches of moisture contained in the snow was welcomed by farmers, however, who were becoming alarmed by lack of rain this fall.
Why we published it: Winter is coming.
On Explaining Slow Progress
“The ordinary human being does not live long enough to draw any substantial benefit from his own experience. And no one, it seems, can benefit by the experiences of others. Being both a father and teacher, I know we can teach our children nothing . . . Each must learn its lesson anew.”
— Albert Einstein, 1929
