— Official News Release, Senator Hoeven —

Senator John Hoeven today announced that Lynn W. Aas of Minot, a decorated veteran of the Second World War, will be his guest at President Barack Obama’s State of the Union Address on Tuesday, January 20. Aas, who fought as a rifleman in the historic Battle of the Bulge, served with the 17th Airborne Division of the 193rd Airborne Infantry in the European Theatre and received the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. Lynn’s son Dan will accompany his father as a guest of Congressman Kevin Cramer.

Lynn returned to North Dakota following the war, earned his law degree from the University of North Dakota and served in the state legislature for four sessions. In March, Aas will be the official representative of the 17th Airborne Division at the 70th annual reenactment of the Battle of the Bulge in Belgium.

“It is an honor to have Lynn Aas as my guest at the State of the Union,” Hoeven said. “As part of our country’s Greatest Generation, he fought bravely at the historic Battle of the Bulge, a turning point in the Second World War. Lynn has long been a pillar of the Minot community, my home town, and I am looking forward to attending the State of the Union Address with him in Washington next week.”

Aas will start his day in Washington with a Capitol tour, led by members of Senator Hoeven’s staff. That evening, he will attend a dinner with the Secretary of the Senate and all of the Senators, after which he will attend the State of the Union Address in a joint session of Congress.
