On this day in 1582, Pope Gregory XIII issued a papal bull outlining his reform of the Julian calendar, creating the Gregorian calendar that we still use today. This change was made to correct the inaccuracies in the old calendar and bring the date of Easter closer to the time of the vernal equinox.
On this day in 1868, the U.S. House of Representatives impeached President Andrew Johnson, making him the first president to be impeached. The impeachment was the result of a political power struggle between Johnson and the Radical Republicans in Congress over Reconstruction policies following the Civil War.
