Wildfire smoke is like smoking ‘half a pack a day.’ Here’s how to protect yourself
As wildfire smoke from Canada drifts across the Midwest and Northeast, air quality alerts are becoming more frequent—and more serious. Breathing this smoke can be as harmful as smoking half a pack of cigarettes a day, especially for children, older adults, and those with health conditions. Experts say the best protection is to stay indoors with windows closed, run an air filter if you have one, and wear an N95 mask outdoors. Every bit of reduced exposure matters.
