Minot’s motel liquor ordinance was enacted into law by a 9-2 vote Monday night, or a margin of passage of one vote. Three aldermen were absent. The final draft of the ordinance provides operators of motels with 39 or more units may file for liquor licenses if they meet the following provisions. The units must be constructed in a contiguous location; restaurant facilities must be provided for in the plans; and the restaurant must operate for equal or greater hours than the bar.

Why We Chose It

Liquor licenses are a source of debate for every generation; we tend to get them right for a little while, then something changes in our attitudes or community, and the law requires changing, too. We are in one of those moments again, arguing about whether to protect current license holders from competition or allow more new businesses to enter the market.
