Lack of sign language interpreters in North Dakota a major barrier

When a video sign language system failed during her son’s hospital emergency, Tammy Derrick demanded an in-person interpreter — and got one. Many North Dakotans aren’t so lucky. With only 15 certified interpreters statewide, and none west of Highway 83, deaf residents often face dangerous communication gaps. Lawmakers are now studying ways to fix the shortage, from rebuilding college programs to exploring technology and AI.
