In politics, what should matter and what does matter aren’t always the same. Democrats—especially in North Dakota—are learning that the hard way. Warnings about threats to democracy or Republican ethics scandals aren’t moving voters nearly as much as the cost of groceries or daily frustrations. If they want to be competitive again, they’ll need to shift focus from moral condemnation to practical concerns—and start speaking to the everyday lives of people who aren’t already listening.
