Historian uncovers forgotten lives of North Dakota’s Norwegian ancestors
If you’ve ever stumbled over the names of your great-grandparents, you’re in good company — most Americans can’t recall them all. For Mandan native Johan Stenslie, that’s a problem worth solving. Now based in Bergen, Norway, he helps clients retrace their family lines, starting with a single grandparent’s name and birth date. From there, he digs into church books, census records, and court files, building a vivid picture of ancestors’ lives. It’s a process that not only uncovers history, but breathes it back into the present. Quinn Berg with Bismarck Tribune has the full story.
