On This Day | Council Debates Road Widths
Author
MinotVoice
The council passed on on first reading an ordinance repealing a 40 year old ordinance limiting paving widths to 30 feet. The old ordinance came to light as the result of a protest by residents on Ninth Street Northwest to a new paving project with a width of 36 feet. The street runs dead end into a steep hill and residents see no need for such a wide street.

Why We Chose It
It’s not a headline grabbing topic, but few things have shaped Minot and other communities more significantly than the seemingly mundane decision about road widths. And for every foot we pave, we pay. And we pay three times and forever. First in loss of productive land. Second in building the road. Third in maintenance. We’ve yet to see when that maintenance may end.
