On This Day | Echoes From the Storm (Out of the Lake and Into the Well)

A homesteader named Bosom had perhaps the narrowest escape from the storm that any man had and survived to tell the tale. He was driving about twenty miles northwest of town that day and became confused. The snow blinded his eyes, and his horses became bewildered and turned going in the opposite direction from his home. To make matters worse his hat blew off and he had no blankets. The wet snow covered his head, freezing in his hair. He came to a hay stack and left the horses and started in the direction of a shack. He wound up in a lake and went through the cold water. He was nearly exhausted when he came to the Albert Slayer shack, and in his hurry to get into the house he walked into the well which was filled with snow. The residents of the shack saw him and came out in time to save him from death. His clothes were taken off, and he was placed in bed. He has recovered from the effects of his perilous journey.

Why We Chose It
In one of our first “closing the loop” stories in this column, we first published news of this storm last September 16. The prairie gave us 10 inches worth on September 14. Now, a week and a year later, we’re hearing more tales of the winters test against late summer. And Mr. Bosom’s script reads like it may have inspired a Buster Keaton movie of the silent era.
