On This Day | Gathering From the Prairie
Author
Josh Wolsky
This plant is a member of the pea family and has five leaflets on each leaf. The rounded or oblong part of the root becomes an inch or more in diameter. It has a leathery covering and a small, fibrous center but most of it is non-fibrous, not tough but rather tasteless. It is interesting that Meriwether Lewis commented that this root had no objectionable features, not true of other roots they ate.

Why We Chose It
It not look like there's much out there, but on closer examination, the prairie does provide. Though, "no objectionable features" is hardly a savory endorsement 🙂 And if modern-day understanding and knowledge of the ancient diet has changed, a updated contribution to this column would be welcomed!
