The bridge is of the continuous truss design with a single span projecting itself across the river for a distance of 1,610 feet. The massive structure, which will be painted black, is supported by two concrete piers, each of which cost $55,000. They are made to rest on 80 steel pilings, which have been driven to a depth of 100 feet below the water level. Sixty-one carloads of material were used in each pier.

Why We Chose It

A Missouri River crossing was and remains a significant piece of infrastructure. Sadly, this bridge was not in service for many more years after this as the flood protection projects of the 1940s took this land back from the tribes and left this location at the bottom of Lake Sakakawea.
